Bird Watching in Malaga

Why not spend a day bird watching in Malaga on a birdwatching tour

Are you an avid birdwatcher back home? Would you like to get to know the local birdlife during your stay at Villa Andalucía? Why not spend a day on a birdwatching tour! Within 1 1/4 hours you can be spotting over 40 different species of birds in the Rio Guadalhorce estuary.

This site is now a real “jewel in the crown” of birding sites in Málaga. Extensive improvements to the site are now complete with good access, pathways, hides, embankments and a sea view site. The downside is that no vehicles are allowed in the Parque. However, the paths and hides overlooking the lagoons are easy to walk and wheelchair friendly too. A plan of the area will be provided on arrival.

If you would like a similar experience  of bird watching in Malaga a little closer to the villa then you can choose a visit to the mouth of the River Vélez in Torre del Mar. Thanks to its low volume of water it’s the perfect spot for birds to stop and rest and the site has very easy access and plenty of crops to provide a variety of potential bird sitings.

Full day bird watching in Malaga experiences

If you would like to make more of a full day out (8/9 hours) of your birdwatching experience then we have plenty of options for you.

From Cómpeta we can go to the Fábrica de la Luz (Canillas de Albaida) and go up to Loma de los Llanos, where we can see and hear short-toed treecreeper, long-tailed tit, great tit, kestrels…

Transfer to Sedella where we take another walk and wait for the appearance of large birds of prey.

We will be surrounded by the impressive Sierra Tejeda massif and reach the Alcázar with the possibility of finding a multitude of forest birds, mountain goats, squirrels and birds of prey. We continue to the road that connects with Zafarraya and stop at its impressive gap before making our way home.

Alternatively, moving slightly further away from Cómpeta we can make a wonderful day trip to Frigiliana to follow the route of the Higuerón river pit, attentive to the cuts that can offer us some surprises.

Starting from the vicinity of the Cueva de Nerja we can take a circular route from which we will see the coast or enter the pine forest looking for the forest birds that move through this area.

We can also finish the day by touring the coast and the cliffs of Maro and looking for pelagic birds from the 16th-century watchtowers.

Malaga offers an exceptional full-day birdwatching experience for nature enthusiasts. Whether exploring the picturesque landscapes near Cómpeta, witnessing the majestic birds of prey in Sedella, or embarking on a captivating day trip to Frigiliana, there is an abundance of natural wonders to discover. The diverse range of bird species, scenic vistas, and the thrill of spotting wildlife in their natural habitats make these excursions truly unforgettable. Immerse yourself in the beauty of Malaga’s natural surroundings, breathe in the fresh air, and let the melodies of birdsong serenade you on an enchanting journey through this remarkable region.

The day exceeded our expectations! Such a beautiful peaceful setting with surrounding gardens. Thank you so much for your hospitality Helen and for arranging our wonderful scenic bird watching in Malaga day. The eagles and vultures were so spectacular to see.
